Mainly on asbestos but also covers other themes, among them the health threat posed by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Includes press coverage of Nancy Tait being shortlisted for the prestigious Beacon Award (category lifetime achievement).

Papers and correspondence (including telephone memoranda) re Westminster Council's management of the Elgin Estate (Chantry and Hermes Points), in particular whether the Council took appropriate action in response to information about asbestos at the blocks and complaints from people who lived in them. Includes

  • documentation of local campaigning subsequent to the Barratt report (see below), including a discussion between former tenants and Dr Julian Peto, February 1997

The Barratt report coincided with a press conference to launch the 'Asbestos hazards handbook', at which Nancy Tait was one of five invited speakers.

Correspondence and papers re application for a Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) Critical Assistance Fund award, to cover the shortfall arising from termination of funding through the London Borough Grants Scheme. Instead of the funds to cover the shortfall, OEDA received a grant for a two day diagnostic to review the organisation's needs. Includes a copy of the diagnostic report.

BBC 4 Michael Frayn appeal

Correspondence and papers re the OEDA BBC 4 radio appeal, 14 March 2004. The appeal was presented by playwright and novelist Michael Frayn, whose sister had died of mesothelioma. After deduction of BBC costs, donations totalled £ 7210.

  • appeal script in various stages
  • letters accompanying donations
  • materials from an earlier application for an OEDA BBC 4 radio appeal, 1998, with a list of all BBC 4 radio appeals 1996, including name of presenter and amount raised (exceeding £ 880,000)

There were extensive records of donations including photocopies of all VISA card transactions and cheques received. These have been disposed of in line with the appraisal policy.
