The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists was founded in 1945, at which time it was called the College of Speech Therapists. The members of the College of Speech Therapists voted in 1991 to change their name to the College of Speech and Language Therapists, and there was another name change in 1995 (the College's Golden Jubilee year) making it the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

The origins of the firm date back to 1937, when Ralph George Covell set up an architectural practice in Westminster, London. In 1948, Covell was joined in business by A E T Matthews, and the practice became known as Covell & Matthews. From 1960, it was known as Covell Matthews & Partners, with offices in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh by 1970. When Covell retired in 1972, the practice changed its name to the Covell Matthews Partnership. In 1976, Covell Matthews Scotland became a separate company within the group. The original company was closed down in 1992, and the Scottish practice became Covell Matthews Architects Ltd.
Covell Matthews & Partners worked on various architectural projects for the University of Strathclyde, including the McCance Building (1962), the conversion of the former Beresford Hotel to the Baird Hall (1964), the Livingstone Tower (1965), and the extension of the Library and exhibition hall (1970).
