The office of Secretary was established in 1990 following a review of the administrative structure of the University. The office replaced the office of Registrar.

The Secretary was responsible for providing secretarial services for the Convocation, the Court, the Senate and the Academic Congress, and, under the direction of the Principal, for the administration of the University. He was also responsible to the Court for the finances of the University and for all University buildings and properties. He was also responsible for student administration.

The Secretary was appointed by the Court.

In 2010, the office of Secretary was replaced by the office of Chief Operating Officer.

The academic registrar was responsible for academic development planning, staff establishment and all student administration including admissions, registration, examinations, student records and statistics.

The post was discontinued in 1973 due to the growth of the University and the appointment of the then post holder to the post of registrar. The duties of the academic registrar became the responsibility of the registrar.

Craigie College of Education was opened in 1964 to train primary school teachers, mainly for the south west of Scotland. It was established in response to increasing primary school rolls and a shortage of primary school teachers.

The College developed close links with the University of Strathclyde, with the College's degrees and certificates being validated and awarded by the University.

In 1993, the College merged with the University of Paisley.

The International Office was established in 1985 to coordinate the University's international affairs. It was responsible for student recruitment through marketing and promotion, the welfare of overseas students, facilitating links and exchange agreements with educational institutions around the world and hosting overseas delegations and academic visitors.

In 2003, the International Office was replaced by the International and Graduate Office.

In 1999, the Centre for Lifelong Learning replaced the Continuing Education Centre. Its remit was to make University education and training accessible to adults locally, regionally and nationally before, during and after their working life.

The Continuing Education Centre was established in 1982 following a restructuring of the Continuing Education Office. Its remit was to liaise with both the University faculties and commerce, industry and national and local government departments to provide a comprehensive programme of continuing education courses for the West of Scotland. In 1999, it was replaced by the Centre for Lifelong Learning.

John Anderson Gilmour was the nephew of Mary and Margaret Gilmour, two of the "Glasgow Girls", who ran a successful art studio in Glasgow teaching women arts and crafts. Gilmour began his career in 1920 at William Anderson & Co Ltd, Glasgow, where he worked until 1929. While working, he also attended the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, 1924-1927, taking evening classes in textiles. In 1929, he joined Thomas Brown (Carlisle) Ltd as a textile designer, becoming factory manager in 1934. From 1938 to 1942, he set up the furnishing fabrics department at Whitworth & Mitchell Ltd, Manchester. This was followed by war service in the Royal Navy, 1942-1946. In 1946, he set up the furnishing fabrics department at J.H. Birtwistle & Co Ltd, Manchester. In 1949, he established his own business, John A. Gilmour & Co Ltd, at Troqueer Mills in Dumfries, producing furnishing fabrics mostly for the upholstery trade. In 1957, following a takeover of the company by his co-directors, he became manager of furnishing fabrics at Whitworth & Mitchell Ltd, Manchester. In 1959, he joined Bartons (Manchester) Ltd, where he was responsible for production and selling. In 1968, he became area organiser of charity fundraising for the National Society for Cancer Relief, London. He retired in 1974.

Planning was responsible for the development of the University's institutional plan and the planning and use of the University's resources. It was also responsible for the compilation of statistical returns for the Funding Council and the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

Strathclyde 100 was a forum for business leaders. Its main activities included networking, mentoring and investment to maximise and unlock business potential and wealth creation by alumni, students and staff. Membership was by invitation only and was limited to one hundred members.
