The office of Secretary was established in 1990 following a review of the administrative structure of the University. The office replaced the office of Registrar.
The Secretary was responsible for providing secretarial services for the Convocation, the Court, the Senate and the Academic Congress, and, under the direction of the Principal, for the administration of the University. He was also responsible to the Court for the finances of the University and for all University buildings and properties. He was also responsible for student administration.
The Secretary was appointed by the Court.
In 2010, the office of Secretary was replaced by the office of Chief Operating Officer.
