History
Charles Geoffrey Wood was appointed Librarian at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow in 1953 and subsequently became the first Librarian of the University of Strathclyde upon the granting of its Rroyal charter in 1964, a post he held until his retirement in 1982. During his time as Librarian the Library underwent major expansion and introduced some of the first applications of new technology in library operations such as telex and an early computerised circulation system. During this period he gained his fellowship of the Library Association and was awarded the honorary degrees of M.A. and M.Litt by the University of Strathclyde and also received the Queen's Silver Jubilee medal. After his retirement he was granted the title of Emeritus Librarian. Wood was also a founding member of the '96 Group which was set up to promote interest in the history of the University prior to its bi-centenary in 1996.
