        History

        Tony Welton (christened George Welton) was born in Barry, Wales in 1911. The youngest of 13 children, his father was a boilermaker at the local docks. In 1935, he moved to Scotland to attend Jordanhill College of Education, studying at the Scottish School of Physical Education and Hygiene. He joined George Heriot’s School in 1939 as one of the PE staff but was called up in 1940 and joined the RAF. He returned to the school and worked there for nearly 40 years.
        He also worked for the BBC doing a fitness programme before 8am, called ‘Up in the Morning Early’. Later, he was an announcer at the Scottish Schools Athletic Championships and the 1970 Commonwealth Games at Meadowbank.
