History
Andrew Sykes graduated with an MA in history from the University of Glasgow in 1950 and was awarded a PhD in 1960. Following several years working in industry, Sykes joined the Scottish College of Commerce in 1959. In 1964, when the College became part of the University of Strathclyde, he was appointed reader in sociology. He became professor of sociology in 1967.
