The Scottish Mountaineering Club was formed in Glasgow in 1889, as a result of correspondence in the Glasgow Herald initiated by William W. Naismith.

The Scottish Mountaineering Club is a private club open to anyone who fulfills the entrance requirements and is proposed by an existing member. There are currently branches in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Fort William, and Perth who take part in climbing expeditions and social activities arranged by club members.
The Scottish Mountaineering Club produces definitive climbers' guides to Scotland's mountains and outcrops, the authoritative guide to Munros and guides for hillwalkers and scramblers in Scotland. The Club also operates five mountain huts in Scotland.
