Biographical history

Archival history

The donor, Mr W. Watt, acquired these photographs from Mrs Janet Stevens (née Forsyth), wife of Professor Thomas Stevens of Gower Street, Pollokshields, Glasgow. Mr Watt was employed as the Stevens' holiday driver for 20 years. Mrs Stevens had been born at the turn of the twentieth century and knew of the Pinkerton family (possibly through her Uncle Willie [Forsyth?], who was involved in a tea warehouse).

Scope and content

The donor believes that these photographs feature Scottish relations of Alan Pinkerton (1819-1884), a Glasgow-born private detective who emigrated to America and founded Pinkerton's National Detective Agency. However, there is insufficient supporting information to establish a definite link.
