Biographical history
Peter McGlashan was born in the parish of Kilfinan, Argyll in 1871. His father, John McGlashan, is described in the parish birth register as a ‘Seaman (Master),’ and Peter pursued a similar career. By 1909, he had become Captain of the SS Felspar, one of a fleet of trading ships owned by William Robertson. After living in Glasgow for a time, Peter McGlashan moved to Kames, Tighnabruaich, where he named his house 'Felspar.' He died there in 1932.

The collection remained in the custody of Mr McGlashan's family until 2011.

Oil painting of the Felspar at sea by unknown artist, 1909; certificate of commission from the Office of the Admiralty, appointing Mr Peter McGlashan to the temporary commission of Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve, 1916.
Appraisal, destruction and scheduling
The collection was appraised in February 2011 and both items were removed from their glass frames for safety and storage.
