William Arthur Macfarlane was born in 1861 in Rothesay. He and his brothers were partners in a wholesale manufacturers of enamelled stamped steel hollow-ware and enamelled advertising plates and had offices in Glasgow, London, Wolverhampton, Capetown, Sydney and Holland. He married Jessie Short Dansken in 1901 in Partick.
