Parte de Spain (and Portugal): General

Various maps and city views in Portugal and Spain.

  • 'Description Del Reyno de Portugal, Y De Los Reynos: De Castilla Que Confinan Con Su Frontera.'; 'De Lineada Par D. Pedro Teixeira que Dedica a su Majestad Catholica Phelipe V. Que Dios Guarde para el Bien de la Chrestiand ad N. de Fer Su Geogrofo'; 'A Paris chez l'Auteur dans l'lsle du Palais de l'Orloge a la Sphere Royale avec Privilege du Roy 1705'; Nicolaus de Fer after Pedro Teixeira Albernaz; 4 1/2 inches to 20 French miles; 1705; black and white; engraving, 45.3 x 56.2 cm

To the above map was added the southern part of Portugal and Spain from a different map with roughly the same scale:

  • Untitled map of Portugal and Spain; 'P. Starck-man sculps[ ]'; 'A Paris du Palais chez le Sr. de Fer a la Sphere Royale avec Privilege du Roy. 1705.'; P [ ] Starck-man after Nicolaus de Fer; scale unspecified; 1705; black and white; engraving, 45.5 x 26.7 cm; probably from Nicolas de Fer, 'Atlas Curieux', 1705, vol. 2, map 73, which was a copy of N. de Fer, 'Suite de /'Atlas Curieux', 1704, vol. 5, map 146, 'Le Royaumes de Portugal et d'Algarve', engraved by P. Stark-man (Pastoreau, Fer ID, p. 183; Fer I, p. 176)

To the above maps were added in the right and left margins city views and plans. Opposing items in the margins formed originally one sheet, which was cut in two halves, then mounted beside the maps.

  • Left margin top: 'Olivenca [ ... Coquart sculp.'

  • Left margin centre: 'Etremos' and 'St. lulien ou St. Giao'; 'A.

Right margin bottom:
    'Evora'; 'A. Coquart sculp.'

The above city views and maps probably from Nicolas de Fer, L'Atlas Curieux, vol. 6, 1705, map 179: Olivença / Setuvial, map:.177: Estiemos I Villa Viçiosa / St. Lulien ou St. Giao / Aronches, and map 178: Elvas / Evora (Pastoreau, Fer I, p. 177).

Along the top margin of the above maps two further engravings were added:

  • Top margin left: 'Palais Royale de Lisbonne.' and 'Le Chateau de Belem.'
