Incoming letters to Hugh Lang, mainly from his plantation manager, William Peebles, and various merchants, relating to the management of his estates in St. Croix in the Danish West Indies. Topics include the production of sugar, rum and molasses; the effects of the weather on production; shipments and sales of sugar, rum and molasses; sugar, rum and molasses prices and state of the markets; shortage of labourers; the provision of supplies to the estates; the valuation and sale of the Estate William. There are also some letters from family members including Ann Beckett of St. Croix (Lang's daughter); George Zachariae of Copenhagen (Lang's son-in-law); and Alexander and Lizzie Eckford, of India (Lizzie Eckford is Lang's niece).

The collection appears to comprise legal, estate and financial records of the Leith Buchanan Family and their antecedents. The documents, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries, relate to land and property in the area around Drymen. Although most refer to title deeds and the purchase or transfer of property, some documents list rents paid and crops grown on the family estates, and a few list the debts owed by individuals, perhaps at the time of their death.

The donor believes that these photographs feature Scottish relations of Alan Pinkerton (1819-1884), a Glasgow-born private detective who emigrated to America and founded Pinkerton's National Detective Agency. However, there is insufficient supporting information to establish a definite link.

The diary covers the period May-November 1856. The anonymous writer, a farmer's son, and his brother appear to have had gold claims at Whitehorse, near Ballarat for about three years. The writer then describes life aboard ship on a voyage (without his brother) from Melbourne on the 'James Baines' bound for Liverpool, as far as Cape Clear.

Reproductions, made c 1977, of photographs taken in 1890 by William Ellerton Fry of the trek of the Pioneer Column from the Macloutsie River in Northern Bechuanaland to the high veld, Matabeleland and Fort Salisbury, Mashonaland, through Providential Pass. The photographs document the progress of the trek and record the contact of the Pioneer Column with the local African population. In addition to the photographs, there is some biographical information about William Ellerton Fry and a press cutting about the unveiling of a memorial to the Pioneer Column in Providential Pass.
