This album was probably compiled by members of the Study Circle Committee from personal papers left by their leader, Robert Shanks. It includes: character testimonials in favour of Robert Shanks; election leaflets for Shanks as candidate for the Whitevale ward in the Glasgow Council elections of 1911 and 1914; newspaper reports of Shanks’ election campaigns and clippings of cartoons ridiculing his speeches to the Council; copy letter from William H. Martin of the Glasgow Branch of the Union of Democratic Control (UDC) to Captain Stevenson, Chief Constable of the City of Glasgow Police, 30 November 1916, explaining the circumstances of a recent disturbance at a UDC meeting chaired by Shanks; copy letter from Robert Shanks to Andrew Arnott, Organising Secretary of the Independent Labour Party, 29 December 1917, regarding Shanks’ application for membership of the party; letter from Andrew F. Arnott to Robert Shanks, 3 January 1918, informing Shanks that he ‘would be a decided acquisition to the Party in Glasgow’; Leaflet entitled ‘A Quaker Appeal to the Citizens of Glasgow’, annotated to substitute each instance of the word ‘Glasgow’ for ‘Dunfermline’; clippings of obituaries and tributes to Shanks published in various newspapers and magazines following his death in 1921.

  • Manuscript verses entitled 'a few lines on the work of Camlachie[‘]s G[lasgow] F[oundry] B[oys’] R[eligious] S[ociety] Bible Class', composed to mark the closing of the session;
  • Set of printed testimonials in favour of Robert Shanks, supporting his application for the post of Organising Secretary and Registration Agent of the Liberal Associations of Flintshire, 1907 (the original manuscript versions of some of the testimonials are pasted into the album);
  • Manuscript testimonial in favour of Robert Shanks by the Reverend James Barr, with a covering letter addressed to Shanks, 17 April 1907;
  • Two typed copies of a testimonial in favour of Robert Shanks by the Reverend William Arnott, Minister of Dennistoun E.U. Church, 24 May 1894;
  • Copy letter from Robert Shanks to James Henry, Pollokshields, making application for the post of Assistant Secretary to the Southern Section of the G[lasgow] U[nited] Y[oung] M[en's] C[hristian] A[ssociation], 25 May 1894;
  • Copy letter from Robert Shanks, making application for the post of Assistant Secretary to the Southern Section of the G[lasgow] U[nited] Y[oung] M[en's] C[hristian] A[ssociation], 9 October 1896;
  • Draft of a letter by R[obert] S[hanks], applying for the post of Assistant Secretary to an unnamed organisation, c 1900;
  • Two incomplete, undated letters from Margaret Sackville to Robert Shanks, declining to come and deliver an address;
  • Letter from John Paterson (junior), to George Prentice, indicating that he cannot attend a planned presentation to Mr Shanks due to illness;
  • Manuscript text of a speech or article about Robert Shanks by William Niven;
  • Copy of 'Foreign Affairs: A Journal of International Understanding', Volume III, number 3, September 1921. Includes a tribute to Robert Shanks by George Aitken, Organising Secretary of the Scottish Federation, on page 48.
  • Pamphlet entitled 'The "Pax Christi" Plan', by the Reverend Dr Albert D. Belden;
  • Letter from 'Lily "Mac"', Eirene, Garelochhead, Dumbartonshire, to '"Auntie"' [Mrs Catherine Shanks?], concerning 'the Doc' [Dr John Shanks, nephew of Robert Shanks] and the recipient's change of circumstances, 16 July 1941.
