Compilations of literature on fibre identification and counting, in alphabetical order (by title of publication). Includes copy of a Parliamentary Question (PQ), February 1999, on the extent to which electron microscopy is employed in the UK for the purpose of assessing the presence of asbestos fibres in lung tissue in order to advise special medical boards on respiratory diseases and coroners.

The first component includes a copy of 'Comments from SPAID on diagnosis of asbestosis by Pneumoconiosis Medical Panels' [1979] and correspondence of Max Madden MP, 1974, among others with members of a Hebden Bridge group practice proposing to undertake an asbestosis study including retrospective survey using semistructured interviews, retrospective death certificate survey, and prospective asbestotic survey.

Correspondence and papers, 1982-1987, re gastrointestinal cancer among asbestos workers. Papers date back to the 1970s. Includes

  • correspondence with medical experts re identification of asbestos fibres in tissues other than the lungs
  • annotated photocopies of scientific literature re asbestos fibre dust and gastrointestinal cancers
  • typescript summary (by Tait?) on the literature re gastrointestinal cancer among asbestos workers and Mr Dennis Kellett's case, inscribed "notes which persuaded the Coroner to adjourn Kellett Inquest"
  • extensive material re Kellett inquest verdict including manuscript and typescript drafts of transcripts of deposition of witnesses, among them Mr Ross D Hunt (BBA Group, Cleckheaton)

In May 1984 the coronor recorded an open verdict on Mr Dennis Kellett, who had worked for 32 years at the Mintex asbestos brake lining factory at Cleckheaton. Mr Kellett had died of gastrointestinal cancer in August 1982, aged 55. For Nancy Tait the verdict was a major breakthrough because it left the way open for asbestos workers with stomach cancer "to have a reasonable chance of getting disability payments from medical panels ..." Tait published an article on the Kellett case in ‘Health and safety at work’ c.1984.
