    Informs Patrick Geddes that John G. Cumming would like to speak to him before granting permission to visit the Bengali rioters in jail. Gives Geddes Mr. Cumming’s address so he could call on him. Encloses a copy of his letter to Mr. Cumming [extant].

Refers to Patrick Geddes's proposal to speak to some of the Bengali rioters who had been imprisoned to persuade them that the remedy to the state's problems lies not in attacking the government but in effective social work. Also includes Patrick Geddes’ handwritten notes on the following correspondence on the topic, ending with a reply from 19 October in which permission to speak to the men is denied.

Acknowledges receipt of Patrick Geddes’ letter of 11 June. Supports Geddes’ suggestion that graduates from Indian Universities should come to St. Andrews to do research in preparation for higher degrees. Informs Geddes that at the moment there are no vacancies due to the large number of research workers that returned from the Army and are due to graduate in two years. Will let Geddes know if a vacancy arises.

Acknowledges receipt of J. Arthur Thomson’s note and Winfield Dudgeon’s letter, which he returns. States that the position of the Church’s Foreign Mission Committee was to discourage Indian students from studying in Scotland with a view to become agents in the services of the Mission, preferring instead that these agents should be trained in India. Is willing to take Dr. Dudgeon’s poposition to the Committee and has made a copy of the letter. The church does not have any bursaties at the moment for such endeavours, but suggests something might be formed. Recommends Rev. F. Ashcroft, Rev. Alex. Miller, and Dr. J.W. Ballantyne.
