Thanks Howe for writing and making 'such kind remarks about my appointment' [Williams was about to take up the position of Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow]. Refers to his first meeting with Howe, 'when, if I remember correctly, we gazed in awe at what aerial photography could do to reveal the geology of some part of the Middle East', and looks forward to returning to Glasgow with his wife and rekindling old friendships there.

Affectionate letter from James Young in London to Miss Mary Young at Paisley, dated 24 December 1837 with a postscript written on 25 December. Young discusses the best means for the couple to send letters to each other; the church he is attending in Regent Square and its minister, Mr MacMorland; the pleasant walks he and Mary had taken back home; Young's old friend, Mr Tennent, formerly Dr Thomson's assistant in Glasgow College, who had been shipwrecked off the coast of Ireland on his way to the East Indies; his teaching activities in London; various family members and various acquaintances at home.
