John Hawthorn Archive

The John Hawthorn Archive comprises the records of two organisations concerned with food science: the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) and the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST).

The combined collection is named after John Hawthorn, Professor of Food Science at the Royal College of Science and Technology and subsequently the University of Strathclyde. Professor Hawthorn was a founder member of IUFoST and instrumental in the deposit of IUFoST's records at the University of Strathclyde.

Most of the collection comprises research notes and papers and article reprints arising from Professor Stenlake’s research into the design and synthesis of the drug atracurium besylate, the first short acting and readily reversible skeletal muscle relaxant for use in surgery. There are also papers relating to Stenlake’s teaching, lectures and administrative responsibilities as well as to his education and awards. There are also photographs of Stenlake and other University of Strathclyde staff.

It contains mainly 19th and 20th century materials for primary and secondary level education, including: books covering tuition of reading, writing and arithmetic; children’s picture books; textbooks; other educational material; and reports on education in Scotland.

Jordanhill College of Education student blazer, manufactured by R.W. Forsyth Ltd and worn by former student, John Connor.
Single-breasted blazer with one breast pocket on the left-hand side, two front pockets on the lower left and right, and three plain, circular, gold-tone buttons to fasten. The blazer is made of navy, woollen fabric; the collar, pockets, cuffs and edges are trimmed with a striped, grosgrain band of red, blue and yellow. Sewn upon the breast pocket is a fabric badge featuring the Jordanhill College of Education crest in red, white, blue, green, black and gold, with the College motto 'UT ET ALIOS INSTRUAM' - 'so that I may instruct others' - embroidered in gold upon a blue ribbon scroll below the crest. Embroidered in gold above the crest are the letters 'J.C.E.A.F.C.' [Jordanhill College of Education Association Football Club?], and below the crest, the dates '1962' and '1963'.
