BBC 4 Michael Frayn appeal

Correspondence and papers re the OEDA BBC 4 radio appeal, 14 March 2004. The appeal was presented by playwright and novelist Michael Frayn, whose sister had died of mesothelioma. After deduction of BBC costs, donations totalled £ 7210.

  • materials from an earlier application for an OEDA BBC 4 radio appeal, 1998, with a list of all BBC 4 radio appeals 1996, including name of presenter and amount raised (exceeding £ 880,000)

There were extensive records of donations including photocopies of all VISA card transactions and cheques received. These have been disposed of in line with the appraisal policy.

BBC 'Watchdog', 8 March 1999

Correspondence and papers re BBC 'Watchdog' programme on asbestos, broadcast 8 March 1999. The bulk of the file is audience response.

  • a little correspondence with the BBC, copies of programme information from Radio Times, print-out of BBC webpage
  • overviews of number of enquiries, new OEDA cases resulting from the programme, address lists etc.

Later Nancy Tait observed that 'Not many of the calls following the Watchdog programme were from people who needed OEDA', concluding that she recently found 'that if OEDA is mentioned at all, especially by the media, we are overwhelmed' (letter to Colin Ettinger, 25 August 1999).

  • correspondence with Fiona Bruce, BBC, including re individuals affected by asbestos-related disease who are willing to talk to the BBC, and re material from the T&N corporate archive, received through Chase Manhattan Bank's legal team
  • overview of response, listing of respondents
  • inquiries by telephone, inquiries by post (both in alphabetical order); includes the occasional death certificate
