Correspondence and papers relating to the implementation of the ideas and practices of the Brazilian adult educator, Paulo Freire. Colin Kirkwood first became aware of Paulo Freire in 1975/1976. He began teaching about him, initially by leading reading groups in the Kirkwoods' home, and later submitted a proposal to Lothian Regional Council for a community-based project to implement Freire's ideas. The proposal was accepted and in 1979, the Adult Learning Project (ALP) was established in the working-class Gorgie Dalry area of Edinburgh. Geraldine Kirkwood played a leading role in the ALP from its inception until 1989.
