Staveley, Derbyshire
GB 249 KIR/2 · Reeks · 1969 - 1976
Part of Kirkwood papers

In 1969, Colin Kirkwood took on the job of area principal for adult education in north-east Derbyshire. There he formed a partnership with Rob Hunter, a community worker. Together, they encouraged the residents of Staveley, Derbyshire, a small coal, steel and chemicals town, to produce 'Staveley Now', a community newspaper devoted to fact-finding and debate on local issues. The work in Staveley was one of the first community action and community adult education projects in Britain. The experience formed the subject of an MSc dissertation by Colin entitled 'Community Work and Adult Education in Staveley December 1969 to December 1971' [not in the collection]. The dissertation was subsequently published by Brill Sense, in 2020.

Contents include a run of 'Staveley Now' (1970-1973) plus research notes, publications and correspondence.

Botanical illustrations
GB 249 OF/8/1 · Reeks · c. 1830

Illustrations of plants which were of pharmaceutical interest in the early 1800s. It is believed they were used for teaching in the Materia Medica classes in the Faculty of Medicine at Anderson's University.

The illustrations appear to fall into two groups: hand-coloured engravings from Wagner's 'Pharmaceutische-Mediziner Botanik' (1828), and a series of hand-coloured drawings by an unknown artist. It is not certain, however, that this grouping is correct. There is also a list, probably of the Wagner engravings, which shows that many illustrations are now missing.
