Asbestos ban campaign

Relates to Nancy Tait's efforts to bring about and implement a prohibition on the importation, manufacture, use and sale of asbestos-containing products in the UK.

Elsewhere in the archive there is documentation of Nancy Tait's involvement in the foundation of 'Ban Asbestos' in Strasbourg on 14 June 1991, at the initiative of the Green Group of Members of the European Parliament. Correspondence (1987-2004) and papers relating to compensation claims against the Johns-Manville Corporation / the Manville Personal Injury Settlement Trust (Manville Trust). Includes papers relating to Johns Manville filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1982.

The Manville Trust was established in 1988 to resolve all further asbestos personal injury claims resulting from exposure to asbestos and asbestos containing products mined or manufactured by the Johns-Manville Corporation and its affiliated entities.

Copies of outgoing correspondence in a series of originally 82 volumes, in chronological order.
Correspondence topics cover many of SPAID/OEDA's functions such as advocacy, networking and administrative communications however a large proportion of the correspondence is related to cases of asbestosis and compensation claims.

Incomplete. The following 35 volumes are missing:

  • vol 1 (? to September 1979)
  • vols 5-26 (October 1981 to April 1988)
  • vols 34-45 (May 1990 to January 1993)

The following display boards have been disposed of in line with health & safety regulations of the University of Strathclyde:

  • ‘Asbestos Insulation’: contained a sample of asbestos rope and asbestos tape in a bag
  • ‘Floor Tiles’: contained vinyl-asbestos tile samples; a photograph of the board survives as part of OEDA display 'Asbestos in the environment' (OEDA/C/3/5/7)
  • ‘Walls and ceilings’: contained sample of Asbestolux ceiling panels
