Biographical history
Ian Bridge was educated at Allan Glen's School, Glasgow, 1924-1931, and at the University of Glasgow, 1931-1935, where he was awarded a B.Sc. in engineering with first class honours in naval architecture. He served an apprenticeship with William Denny & Brothers Ltd., 1932-1937, and went on to work for their Experiment Tank, 1937-1946. He subsequently joined the department of shipbuilding and naval architecture at the University of Strathclyde and worked variously as lecturer, 1946-1965; reader, 1965-1970; and professor, 1970-1976. He was appointed to the chair of shipbuilding and naval architecture on 1 June 1970.
