The Salaries Committee was appointed at the first Council meeting of the College on 21 Oct 1944. The first meeting of the Salaries Committee was 02 Dec 1944 and the Terms of Reference were:
"To investigate the Salaries and conditions of work of Speech Therapists and to report what principles should guide The College of Speech Therapists in these matters in the future. This investigation to include the consideration of conditions prevailing in comparable professions."

It appears that the Salaries Committee ceased to exist between November 1945 and October 1948. There are no minutes after the agenda for a meeting 17 November 1945 until the first meeting of the 'revived Salaries Committee' on 23 October 1948.

The Training School Consultative Committee began life as the 'Principal's Panel': an advisory panel to the 'Training and Registration Board' (Academic Board) that explored and reported upon the following professional concerns: entrance qualifications; training of Speech Therapists; and clinical training . It was formed at the first meeting of the Training and Registration Board on 21 Jul 1964 but it's name was changed to the 'Training Schools Consultative Committee' in Nov 1964.
The Training Schools Consultative Committee formed a 'Training Schools Advisory Committee' to represent them on the Training and Registration Board.
The Committee's named changed to the 'Committee of Representatives of Education in Speech Therapy' (CREST) at the end of 1981.

We believe that the Finance and General Purposes Committee began life as a panel of the Council of the College of Speech and Language Therapists. In a meeting of the Executive Committee of 14 Dec 1964, under the heading 'General Purposes & Finance Committee', there is discussion of the increased workload of the Council. It is agreed that the Council workload would be reviewed and the 'percentage of items that could have been dealt with by the Executive' discovered. Shortly after this, in May 1965, the formation of four 'Panels' including a 'Finance Panel' was suggested by Dr McAllister. The panel was agreed by the Council on 17 Jul 1965 and its Terms of Reference were:
"i) to oversee annual income and expenditure
ii) to make recommendations regarding the annual dues of-
a) retired members
b) non-practising members
c) members in part-time service
d) reinstatement of lapsed members

It was also agreed that others not on Council could act in a consultative capacity..."
The panel seems to begin to be referred to as a 'committee' in Council minutes from 1966 onwards.

The Sub-committee of the Steering Committee started as the Advisory Committee on Policy. The inaugural meeting of the Advisory Committee on Policy was held 01 Jul 1971 after its terms of reference were approved by the Council on 12 Jun 1971. The purpose of the committee was "to investigate and produce reports for Council on subjects of continuing interest to the profession and which affect policy of the College, and make recommendations." For full Terms of Reference, see the first page of RCSLT/5/7/1.
In 1973, the Advisory Committee on Policy was replaced by the Sub Committee of the Steering Committee. The first meeting of this new committee was 30 Apr 1973 and it was formed to further implement the Quirk Report and re-organisation of services. (See RCSLT/5/7/1).
