The Department of Electrical Engineering had its origins in 1886 with the appointment of a Professor of Engineering with responsibility for day class instruction in Electrical Engineering. In 1892, an independent Chair of Electrical Engineering was established.

In 1982, the Department of Electrical Engineering amalgamated with the Department of Electronic Science and Telecommunications to form the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

Charles Allan was a lecturer in economics at the University of Strathclyde, c. 1966-1975. He was also world caber-tossing champion, 1972. He later became a farmer in Aberdeenshire and a broadcaster.

Adam Thomson obtained an associateship in chemical engineering at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow in 1930. In 1935 he was appointed lecturer in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the College. This was followed by appointments as senior lecturer in 1945 and professor in 1947. In 1968 he was appointed deputy principal of the University of Strathclyde. He retired in 1973.

The University of Strathclyde Staff Club Music Society was formed in 1968 with the aim of promoting musical activities of all forms among its members and to encourage the enjoyment of music in the University. Membership was open to members of the University of Strathclyde Staff Club.

The Department of Industrial Administration was established in 1947. It was closely involved in the Glasgow School of Management and was also the parent department to a Technical (later Industrial) Liaison Service. It was absorbed by the Department of Administration in 1971.
