The Joint Provisional Council of the College of Speech Therapists was set up to prepare for the amalgamation of the Association of Speech Therapists and the British Society of Speech Therapists, and the formation of a single organisation.
The Council was formed of 9 members from each organisation, who then became the College of Speech Therapists' 18 Founder Fellows. The first meeting occurred on 02 Dec 1943.

The Salaries Committee was appointed at the first Council meeting of the College on 21 Oct 1944. The first meeting of the Salaries Committee was 02 Dec 1944 and the Terms of Reference were:
"To investigate the Salaries and conditions of work of Speech Therapists and to report what principles should guide The College of Speech Therapists in these matters in the future. This investigation to include the consideration of conditions prevailing in comparable professions."

It appears that the Salaries Committee ceased to exist between November 1945 and October 1948. There are no minutes after the agenda for a meeting 17 November 1945 until the first meeting of the 'revived Salaries Committee' on 23 October 1948.

The Training Schools Consultative Committee formed a 'Training Schools Advisory Committee' to represent them on the Training and Registration Board.

We believe that the Finance and General Purposes Committee began life as a panel of the Council of the College of Speech and Language Therapists. In a meeting of the Executive Committee of 14 Dec 1964, under the heading 'General Purposes & Finance Committee', there is discussion of the increased workload of the Council. It is agreed that the Council workload would be reviewed and the 'percentage of items that could have been dealt with by the Executive' discovered. Shortly after this, in May 1965, the formation of four 'Panels' including a 'Finance Panel' was suggested by Dr McAllister. The panel was agreed by the Council on 17 Jul 1965 and its Terms of Reference were:
"i) to oversee annual income and expenditure
ii) to make recommendations regarding the annual dues of-
a) retired members
b) non-practising members
c) members in part-time service
d) reinstatement of lapsed members

It was also agreed that others not on Council could act in a consultative capacity..."
The panel seems to begin to be referred to as a 'committee' in Council minutes from 1966 onwards.

The Sub-committee of the Steering Committee started as the Advisory Committee on Policy. The inaugural meeting of the Advisory Committee on Policy was held 01 Jul 1971 after its terms of reference were approved by the Council on 12 Jun 1971. The purpose of the committee was "to investigate and produce reports for Council on subjects of continuing interest to the profession and which affect policy of the College, and make recommendations." For full Terms of Reference, see the first page of RCSLT/5/7/1.
In 1973, the Advisory Committee on Policy was replaced by the Sub Committee of the Steering Committee. The first meeting of this new committee was 30 Apr 1973 and it was formed to further implement the Quirk Report and re-organisation of services. (See RCSLT/5/7/1).

Covell Matthews Architects Ltd
C0432 · Entidade coletiva · 1960-1996

The origins of the firm date back to 1937, when Ralph George Covell set up an architectural practice in Westminster, London. In 1948, Covell was joined in business by A E T Matthews, and the practice became known as Covell & Matthews. From 1960, it was known as Covell Matthews & Partners, with offices in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh by 1970. When Covell retired in 1972, the practice changed its name to the Covell Matthews Partnership. In 1976, Covell Matthews Scotland became a separate company within the group. The original company was closed down in 1992, and the Scottish practice became Covell Matthews Architects Ltd.
Covell Matthews & Partners worked on various architectural projects for the University of Strathclyde, including the McCance Building (1962), the conversion of the former Beresford Hotel to the Baird Hall (1964), the Livingstone Tower (1965), and the extension of the Library and exhibition hall (1970). It also submitted a scheme for the University's recreation centre at Stepps, but the University chose to work with another firm on that occasion.
