Herbert Fitton Stockdale was educated at Boothroyd School, Yorkshire. At the age of 21 he was appointed assistant secretary of the Durham College of Science, Newcastle-on-Tyne. This was followed by his appointment, in 1899, as Secretary and Treasurer of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. In 1904, he was appointed Director, which post he held until 1933.
In 1919 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of Glasgow.
