Scope and content

Correspondence with Dr Robin Rudd, Consultant Physician, London Chest Hospital. Includes

  • case correspondence (especially re current medical appeals)
  • correspondence re new evidence owing to use of electron microscopy (and the setting up of the SPAID Electron Microscopy Unit)
  • correspondence re current scientific research on asbestos-related pneumoconiosis, latency time, etc.
  • some solicitors correspondence
  • press reports

Nancy Tait's position on latency was (to Robin Rudd, 28 November 1986): “I have always argued that statistics and averaging are concealing the true picture of asbestos deaths, and while the attitude of Sir Richard Doll (page 53 of his report) ‘This corresponds to a loss of expected life of about 1 month averaged over the whole work-force, but of about 12 years for affected individuals’ is perhaps extreme, SPAID will certainly not play the numbers game. Our work shows that both exposure and latency period are random. My own opinion is that it is largely a matter of chance whether or not one develops mesothelioma. I am surprised to find myself keeping company with Dr Kevin Browne on latency time …”
