        History

        James Leitch was educated at Allan Glen's School, Glasgow and matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1918. He studied at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow from 1919 to 1922, graduating with a BSc in Applied Chemistry.

        He went on to work for the College serving as Assistant in Pharmacy, 1924-1937, Lecturer in Bakery Technology, 1937-1948, and Senior Lecturer, 1948-c.1964. In addition, he was Advisor of Studies, 1955-1964, and acted as Clerk to the Board of Studies. He was also a governor of the Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science, a member of the Business Committee of the University of Glasgow's General Council and a member of the Scottish Bakers' Education Committee.

        Leitch was admitted as an Associate of the Royal Institute of Chemistry in 1947 and became a Fellow in 1950. He served on the Committee of the Scottish Section of the Society for Analytical Chemistry, 1949-1951. In 1947 he became a member of the Society of Chemical Industry and in 1952 was appointed Honorary Secretary of the Glasgow section. In 1964 he was elected Vice-President. During the 1939-1945 war he was a member of the Gas Identification Service.
