Margaret Woodrow Leckie, born 14 Aug 1913, was a chemistry student at the Royal Technical College (RTC). She was educated at the Glasgow High School for Girls before entering the RTC in 1931 as holder of the Muirhead Scholarship. While studying, she took subjects such as Technical Chemistry, Bacteriology, and Chemical Laboratory and she also won the William Marr prize in 1933. She joined the committee of the Royal Technical College student Magazine, 'The Mask' in February 1933 and became the first female Editor when she was appointed in session 1934-1935. Leckie also served on the Students Representative Council and was President of the Andersonian Chemical Society. Margaret Woodrow Leckie obtained her Diploma in Chemical Science in 1935. She also attained a BSc Degree in Applied Chemistry from the University of Glasgow in 1936 and later achieved a PhD, also from the University of Glasgow, in 1945 with a thesis titled: 'Studies on the action of antibacterial chemotherapeutic drugs'. Margaret became a research assistant in the Pathology Department of the University of Glasgow.
