      History

      Lawrence Carmichael Earle was an American Painter born in New York City, 11 November 1845 and died in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1921. In 1897, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate Academician. In 1907 he painted the "Dutch Boy Painter", still used in adverting illustrations to this day. After studying and painting in New York for several years he moved to Chicago, where he opened a studio and painted until the disastrous fire of 1871. From there he went to Europe and, after several years of study and work in Munich, Florence, Paris and other European cities, returned to America. Earle was an honorary member of the Association of the National Academy and recognized at the height of his renown as the leading water colour painter of America.
