Ross Priory

The estate of Ross Priory on the shores of Loch Lomond was owned by the Leith Buchanan Family for many years. The present house of Ross Priory (a fine example of Gothic architecture) was designed in 1810 by James Gillespie.

In 1925, the estate was leased by Major George Christie, a businessman with interests in the local textile industry. Christie purchased the estate in 1949 and lived there until 1969. He was responsible for designing the informal garden and collecting plants on trips to the Himalayas.

In 1972, the estate was purchased by the University of Strathclyde.

Ross Priory Club

Ross Priory Club was founded in 1973 by the University of Strathclyde as a recreational and conference centre. It is situated in 200 acres of parkland on the South East shoreline of Loch Lomond. Membership of the club is open to all current and retired members of staff and to graduates of the University.

Donald Ross joined the Royal Technical College, Glasgow in 1946 to teach engineering and technical subjects. He was appointed lecturer in mechanical and production engineering in 1952. In 1961 he was appointed lecturer in production engineering at the Royal College of Science and Technology and, in 1963, he became senior lecturer in production engineering at the University of Strathclyde. In 1967 he was appointed Rolls-Royce Professor at the University.

Rotterdam Convention

The Rotterdam Convention is a global treaty to manage chemicals in international trade.
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) developed and promoted voluntary information exchange programmes in the mid-1980s. A series of meetings and activity led to the formalisation of the Rotterdam Convention. The text of the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade was adopted and opened for signature at the Conference of Plenipotentiaries held in Rotterdam on 10 September 1998.
The Convention entered into force on 24 February 2004 and became legally binding for its parties.
