The Department of Mathematics had its origins in 1825 with the appointment at Anderson's Institution (antecedent of the University of Strathclyde) of the institution's first permanent professor of mathematics. It was not until around 1890, however, that the department itself formally came into existence.

The Department of Information Science was formed in 1985 from the amalgamation of the Department of Librarianship and the Department of Office Organisation. Both of these had their origins in the Scottish College of Commerce (an antecedent of the University of Strathclyde). In August 2001, the Department of Information Science merged with the Department of Computer Science to form the Department of Computer and Information Sciences.

In August 1986, the Department of Mechanical and Offshore Engineering was formed from the merger of the Department of Dynamics and Control, the Department of Mechanics of Materials, the Department of Thermodynamics and the Department of Ship and Marine Technology. In 1987, it merged with the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering and the Department of Metallurgy and adopted the new title Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering.

In October 1988, the Department of Organisation, Management and Employment Relations was formed from the merger of the Department of Administration and the Department of Industrial Relations. In 1990, the department was renamed the Department of Human Resource Management.

The Law School originated with the teaching of law at the Scottish College of Commerce. In 1964, the Royal College of Science and Technology, Glasgow and the Scottish College of Commerce amalgamated to form the University of Strathclyde and a Department of Law was established. In December 1970, a change of title from the Department of Law to the Law School was approved by Senate.

The School of Navigation was established in 1910 to provide seamen with the technical knowledge necessary to advance their career prospects. Its qualifications were recognised by the Board of Trade. The School was well equipped with different models and apparatus for imparting the principles of seamanship, navigation and nautical astronomy including an observatory complete with telescope, a mock navigation bridge, known as the Land-Ship, on the roof of the School, and four boats on the River Clyde which were used for practical training. In 1912, a steamer, the Vivid, was purchased as a training ship but it was wrecked in 1913 off Colonsay on its very first voyage after the purchase.
